Focus group

Today me and two other students in my class, Ryan Harris and Christopher Fisk analysed the clip from the film the revenant that inspired my game to see what I can improve from their thoughts and ideas.

These people are very knowledgeable and thoughtful which will help me get the best results I want from this.

My results I got were very helpful, they both thought about how the sounds suited the scene very well and as audio in games is very effective, that’s an idea I can work on and work with successfully. “The CGI to the bear was very well made” quoted by one of the interviewee’s. this gives me a lot of things to work on and add to my game to make it effective.

A focus group is a form of qualitative research consisting of interviews in which a group of people are asked about their perceptions, opinions, beliefs, and attitudes towards a product, concept or idea. It is also a common qualitative research technique used by companies for marketing purposes.


The main advantages of focus groups are:

  • they are useful to obtain detailed information about personal and group feelings, perceptions and opinions

  • they can save time and money compared to individual interviews

  • they can provide a broader range of information

  • they offer the opportunity to seek clarification

  • they provide useful material eg quotes for public relations publication and presentations


The main disadvantages of focus groups are:

  • there can be disagreements and irrelevant discussion which distract from the main focus

  • they can be hard to control and manage

  • they can to tricky to analyze

  • they can be difficult to encourage a range of people to participate

  • some participants may find a focus group situation intimidating or off-putting; participants may feel under pressure to agree with the dominant view

  • as they are self-selecting, they may not be representative of non-users.
